Speeding and alcohol caused crash that killed five people

HILO, Hawaii (AP) _ Officials say excessive speed and alcohol contributed to the three-vehicle accident that killed five people near the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Chief Ranger Talmadge Magno says the crash happened Friday night when a 2005 Porsche sport utility vehicle carrying a male driver and two female passengers collided head-on with two cars heading in the opposite direction on Highway Eleven.

All three in that vehicle died including 55-year-old Samuel Furtado, 46-year-old Loretta Rafferty and 60-year-old Lucia Clearwater. They were all from Volcano, Hawaii.

Thirty-two-year-old Candice Chisholm and 33-year-old Owen Romaine, both of Vancouver, Canada, who were driving in a 2006 Chrysler convertible rental car, also died.

Honeymoon a moving experience for Warner Robins couple

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE - Evan and Erin Lagasse heard all the jokes Friday about making the earth move on their honeymoon and about hotels doing the hula.

But both are relieved to get through the Oct. 15 Hawaii earthquake with a minimum of fuss and bother and no personal injuries. Friday was their first day back at work. Evan is a second lieutenant in the public affairs office at Robins Air Force Base and Erin teaches kindergarten at Lake Joy Elementary in Warner Robins.

Erin said a number of teachers poked their heads in her classroom Friday and made some comment along the lines of: "Way to go. You guys made the earth shake." Evan said he received similar ribbing.

But the jokes were hard to come by about 7 a.m. on the 15th.

Evan said he was the first to wake up but Erin was the first to say anything.
